Written by Goretti Kyomuhendo, Whispers from Vera is about a beautiful, ambitious Ugandan woman named Vera and her complicated love life at the turn of the millennium. Presented as a series of letters, Vera confides in her reader, sharing juicy details about her friendships and sexual relationships. During the course of the novel, Vera marries Eric after becoming pregnant with his child. Amidst infidelity, secrets, and separation, Vera seeks her independence despite Eric’s reluctance. The pages recount Vera’s love affair with Ben, Eric’s friend, which causes a pregnancy scare. Drama ensues between Vera and her stepdaughter, Martina. Tragedy almost strikes when son Arthur becomes ill and has to go to South Africa for surgery. Vera’s career, however, takes off and she is offered a promotion, but she has to move to West Africa.
