Goretti Kyomuhendo
“My journey as a writer started the day I read Things Fall Apart." Born on August 1, 1965, Kyomuhendo is an Ugandan novelist and literary activist. Her debut novel, The First Daughter, was well received when published in 1996. She has published 7 novels, including her 2002 Whispers from Vera and 2007 Waiting: A Novel of Uganda's Hidden War. Participant at the inaugural International Festival in Berlin in 2001, Kyomuhendo has been praised for her “internationally renowned novels.” She has also been acknowledged in African literary circles for her service from 1997 to 2007 as the first Programmes Coordinator for FEMRITE, Uganda Women Writers Association. After relocating to London, Kyomuhendo founded the African Writers Trust in 2009. She was the recipient of the Uganda National Book Trust award in 1999 for Secrets No More. She was a fellow at the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa.
